Why am I being referred for neuropsychological testing?
Patients are commonly referred for neuropsychological evaluation for several reasons, including: evaluation of specific neurological conditions or traumatic brain injury (TBI), when subtle or uncertain deficits appear on mental status examinations, when neurological conditions such as stroke, dementia, or encephalopathy are present, neurotoxic exposure, developmental disorders, learning disabilities, or ADD/ADHD, distinguishing between organic and psychiatric conditions, evaluation of potential malingering, forensic matters and litigation concerning a patient's cognitive abilities, aiding in diagnosis, tracking the progression of a disorder, and determining prognosis, concerns related to returning to work or school, and developing rehabilitation strategies. How do I get to the clinic?
The packet mailed to you includes a map showing our location and written directions to guide you from any area of Oklahoma City. If you require an additional copy of the map, please contact NeuroResources Neuropsychological Services at 405-286-6000 or click the "Get Directions" button located in the footer of this website. What does the clinic look like?
Our clinic is situated in a single-story office complex featuring brick and blue-gray exterior walls. The most visible sign at the front of the building reads Windy City Autos. Front parking and handicap-accessible entry are available, with additional parking and a second entrance located at the rear of the building. Suite 7 is where you'll find us once you enter the courtyard. We're the first suite on the left when entering from the front. Upon entering our clinic, you'll find the waiting area with the reception desk positioned to your left. What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, personal checks, and multiple credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Credit card payments are subject to a nominal 5% processing fee.Do you accept insurance?
Currently, NeuroResources does not participate with insurance providers. We do provide competitive private pay rates or can recommend alternative practitioners. We're also happy to supply the necessary information should you choose to submit claims to your insurance independently.Do I need to bring anything with me?
Please bring several items for your testing day: any medications you'll need to take during the day, money or food for lunch (nearby restaurants and fast food establishments are available, or you may use our refrigerator and microwave if you prefer to bring your own meal), and the packet we sent you by mail or email (this includes your appointment confirmation letter, general appointment information, directions to our office, and a history questionnaire that must be completed before your arrival). Your packet may also contain an additional lengthy questionnaire we'd like you to complete prior to your appointment. What can I expect when I get there?
You'll be greeted by a courteous and compassionate staff. Upon arrival, you'll complete one to five pages of registration forms and meet the doctor along with any intern or resident assigned to your case. The clinic manager will outline how your day will unfold and address any questions you have at that time. Throughout the testing day, you'll meet with the doctor to review your history and discuss any current challenges or concerns. A similar interview will be conducted with a close family member or friend at some point during the day. Beyond the interview, you'll complete various tasks while seated across from one of our neuropsychology technicians in a private, distraction-free room. Each task includes specific instructions to follow. These assessments examine brain function across several domains: overall intelligence, attention and concentration, memory, language, perception, basic motor abilities, and higher-level cognitive processes such as reasoning and problem solving. You'll also complete questionnaires regarding your mood and emotional well-being. All tests are non-invasive, involve no needles, and require no blood draws. How long will I be there?
Your time with us will be either half a day for a brief evaluation or a full day for a comprehensive evaluation. Brief assessments take approximately four hours with short breaks of 5-15 minutes distributed throughout the morning or afternoon. Comprehensive evaluations run from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on your appointment day, including a one-hour lunch break and multiple 5-15 minute breaks throughout the day.Why do you want to talk to or meet with a family member or friend?
When someone experiences an injury, their recovery period may affect their full awareness of their current capabilities and limitations. Furthermore, those closest to us often have valuable insights into our functioning that we may not recognize ourselves. Gathering information from family members or friends allows us to develop a more complete understanding of how you're functioning both within the clinical setting and in your everyday life.Does my family member need to stay at the clinic the whole time while a patient is being tested?
Typically, a patient's family member or close friend isn't required to stay at the clinic for the full duration. However, in certain situations (such as when the patient is a minor or has special needs), we prefer that a family member or representative remain on-site. If you have questions or need clarification, please call our clinic at 405-286-6000. We generally ask a friend or family member to provide collateral information through brief questionnaires followed by an interview with the doctor. This process requires approximately one to one and a half hours and can be scheduled anytime during the testing day. This timing can be arranged either before the appointment or when the patient arrives on the morning of the appointment (if the friend or family member accompanies them). Deanna Durbin, our clinic manager, will likely address this when scheduling the appointment. After completing the questionnaires and interview, they may leave or stay at the clinic for the rest of the day. We provide a comfortable waiting area with a television and beverages available, including coffee, tea, and water (though we don't have a Coke machine on-site). The office complex also features a pleasant courtyard that visitors are welcome to use.
